10 Job Interview Questions You Should Be Ready To Answer

job-interview-questions-1There are a lot of people looking for work and preparing for job interviews. You have to make yourself stand out from the crowd. I have created a list of 10 questions that you should be ready to answer if you are asked at a job interview.

What are your strengths?

Make sure you can explain at least 2-3 strengths to the interviewer. If you don’t know your strengths, how can you expect to get a job? Take time to think about the answer before the interview.

What are your weaknesses?

This has always been a very tricky question for me. You don’t want to sound cocky or arrogant by saying you have none. You also don’t want to keep it too real by saying that you get bored easily if there is nothing to do. Take some time to think thoroughly about this answer.

What is your dream job?

Tell the interviewer the truth especially if you want to move up within the company. Some people ask this question just to see where your mind frame is at.

Why did you leave your last job?

Do not tell the interviewer that it sucked. That’s one of the quickest ways for you to not get the job.  Being honest with him/her can go a long way.


Give a time when you went above and beyond for a customer.

This is a question that I have had in numerous interviews.  You want to make sure that the situation is really one where you went above and beyond and helped.

What do you know about the company?

Research the company. I have had this question in 99% of the interviews that I have had. Check the company’s website out a few days before the interview so that you can learn a few things. There is nothing worse than freezing up when the interviewer asks you that question. Unfortunately, I have been in that situation. It’s not a good experience.

Why do you think you would be a good fit at their company?

A lot of people use the cliche answers such as “I’m a hard worker” or “You guys seem to have a lot of diversity.” Those are decent but try to dig a little deeper. Give them a real reason why you would be a good fit.

What are your hobbies?

Everybody has hobbies. Some are good while others may not be. Only tell them the good ones 🙂 .

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

If you see yourself having your own company and traveling (even if it’s true), don’t tell them that. They will not call you back for a second interview. A lot of businesses want employees that they think will stick around for the long haul. Even if you know you’re not going to be there in 5 years; you don’t have to let them know that.

Do you have any questions for me?

This is another question that I have heard pretty much at all my interviews. It is always good to ask the interview a couple of questions. If they haven’t answered it, I usually ask them how long they’ve been with the company or what is the best thing that they like about the job.

    I have encountered most of these questions in my previous interviews. I always have the hardest time with the question “what are your weakness”. I will definitely have to use some of your pointers on my next interview.

  2. Good list of questions, but depending on who you are interviewing with, you might get some more challenging. I worked for a consulting firm for 7 years, and some of the questions I’ve heard asked are: “How many barbers are there in Chicago” or “how many man hole covers are there in New York City”. Basically, trying to see how your brain works and if you can use deductive reasoning to get to a logical answer.

  4. Good questions. I think that you should be prepared for behavioral questions too- like “tell me about a time when you had to solve a difficult problem, or were under a lot of pressure”, “tell me about a difficult customer you’ve dealt with”

  5. Great points! I always that the what is your weakness question to be quite tricky. I responded, in an interview for a sales position, that my weakest characteristic was that I was unable to take NO for an answer. Got the job 🙂

  6. As a career professional, these are questions I am always exploring with my students. They always stumble on “What are your weaknesses” because they are confused on whether to be truthful or just keep it positive but with honesty.

  7. When I am asked what are my weaknesses I always say that I am impatient because I want to know everything right now when it comes to my job. Sometimes I have to pace myself because everything is a process……I always get a good response from that answer.

  8. A good list that covers the basics of what to expect from most interviews. When I interviewed for teaching positions, I found a database of over one hundred potential questions and practiced my butt off!

    • I think that you should continue telling them that you expect to get paid a certain amount. Also let them know that you expect to have good camaraderie in the workplace as well.

  10. Great list of questions. Not long ago, I was doing interviews for sales directors, managers and associates and these were many of the questions we would ask. Some of the way people would answer could make or break their opportunity to work for our organization. We would sometimes ask off the wall questions like who is your favorite cartoon character and why. We would get some pretty funny looks and even funnier answers. Sometimes their answer would tell us more about them and their personality then the previous questions we had asked. 🙂

  13. You can pretty much expect to be asked most if not all of these questions. How you answer these questions will determine how the interview continues and if they think you are a serious prospect or not.

  16. I interviewed a couple of people this week and I would add “What is the most frustrating part of your current job?” to the list. Another good one is “Tell me about a time you had to act with little direction?” Also, “Tell me about a time you had competing priorities. How did you decide what to work on and what not to work on?”
