Homecoming Weekend

homecoming-2013

Homecoming weekend is one of the best times during football season. Even if your schools football team is sorry, you should still have a good time. SSU’s homecoming is next Saturday. I am ready for it. I have a few homecoming (HC) tips to get you ready for it. These tips apply to anyone at any school.

1. Book your hotel early. It’s good to book your hotel room a couple months in advance. If your school is in a big city, you may be able to get away with booking a last minute room. If you are in a small town, don’t risk it. It would suck if you went to HC and had to sleep in your car.

2. Decide how you are going to get there. You may want to fly or rent a car for HC. You may want to carpool down there with some of your college buddies. Make sure you take the time to figure out which transportation option works best for you.

3. Network with your classmates that you haven’t seen in a while. If you’re in a fraternity or sorority network with members you see as well. You never know what type of help or guidance that they can have for you. They may even help you get a job one day.

4. Decide what activities and parties you want to attend. There will be numerous activities going on at your school. There is no way that you can go to all of them. Choose the ones that you think you will enjoy the most and attend those. The same is true with the HC parties. There is usually more than one party per night from Thursday – Saturday of HC week. Decide which one you want to attend and get there early. It’s HC meaning two things; parties will be a little more expensive and inflation will be in effect.

5. Get enough rest the days before. If you are an alumni coming back for HC make sure you get enough rest. You will probably be doing a lot of walking and partying. You don’t want to be tired and tap out early.

6. Drink enough water. You have to stay hydrated during HC weekend. I have seen people pass out before. It’s not a pretty site. Make sure you have a couple bottles of water with you in your car.

7. Make sure you go to the tailgate. Tailgating is one of the best parts of HC. That is the best chance to see and network with everybody. It’s like a big family reunion. You have to enjoy it. Food, music and souvenir tables will be everywhere. Who would want to miss that?

8. Bring enough cash. There will be people selling food and souvenirs at the tailgate. Most of them only take cash. There is a good chance that you will see something that you like.

9. Make sure that you come dressed correctly. This has nothing to do with style but more with the types of clothing you will wear. Check the weather before you leave for HC. You don’t want to have shorts on and its 50 degrees. October is a very tricky month depending on where your school is located. I have been to HC’s at Savannah State and the temperature has been in the 70’s, but I have been to some where the temps were in the high 50’s as well. Under-dressing is the easiest way to get sick!

These are a few tips that people should think about before going to HC. Do you have any other tips that can people during HC week?
